Folio Photonics’ optical‑disk technology will power Archive‑as‑a‑Service offerings in Brazil via Savartus and OAIS Cloud.

Brazilian storage cloud provider OAIS Cloud acts as the strategic local partner, responsible for promotion, deployment and operation of the joint solution for regional clients, alongside delivering the archive‑as‑a‑service platform. Savartus builds enterprise‑grade optical archive infrastructure for large‑scale long‑term data preservation; it spun off independently from Rimage Corporation’s Active Archive division in late 2024. Folio Photonics develops multi‑layer optical disks supporting up to 32 layers. Its first‑generation media delivers 1‑2 TB per disc packaged into cartridges, and closed an $8 million Series‑A funding round in June.

Folio Photonics CEO Steven Santamaria commented: “AI, scientific datasets and digital‑government initiatives drive unprecedented demand for cost‑effective long‑retention storage. Our multi‑layer optical media boosts archival density while cutting power use and long‑term costs. This partnership embeds the technology within a full preservation architecture to safeguard critical digital assets across generations.”

The combined solution merges OAIS Cloud’s ISO 16363‑certified environment and ISO 14721 (OAIS) preservation framework, Savartus autonomous storage hardware and Folio’s optical media. It is engineered for secure, authentic multi‑generational digital preservation resilient to technology obsolescence.

Savartus’ ELS 8000 and ELS 10K enterprise‑laser‑storage immutable archive libraries support both Blu‑ray and Folio Photonics media, including 500 GB and 1 TB Folio discs housed in 12‑disc cartridges sized similarly to LTO. Cartridges load into magazines with 30 or 36 slots, with the roadmap targeting 10 TB per medium.

Savartus states the ELS‑8000 delivers superior 5‑year TCO versus AWS Deep Glacier and 32 TB HDD archives. It approaches tape‑archive TCO without tape‑required media refreshes and upgrades.

A core innovation from the three partners is cloud infrastructure built upon the EMP‑Immune Layer. The archive architecture targets organisations holding massive datasets: national archives, digital‑government platforms, scientific research data, satellite imagery, financial records and cultural‑heritage collections.

Folio Photonics’ roadmap targets commercial disc and drive launches this year, though neither Folio nor Savartus have released formal availability announcements. Gregg Kittilson was promoted from VP‑Engineering to CTO in June. Per his LinkedIn profile, he oversees multilayer‑technology roadmaps, IP, optical materials, disc and drive development plus internal and external manufacturing work for films, discs, optical pick‑up units, drive hardware and partner library systems.

While the partnership announcement suggests market‑ready technology, this would give Folio Photonics an edge against rivals Cerabyte, Ewigbyte, Holomem, Microsoft Project Silica and Optera, plus deliver differentiated hardware for Savartus’ archive software. However, follow‑up inquiries confirm Folio’s discs and drives remain pre‑commercial. Santamaria’s remarks reference future capabilities rather than currently deployable products.
