AWS has launched generally available Amazon EC2 R9g and R9gd instances, new memory-optimized platforms built on AWS Graviton5 Arm processors. Tailored for databases, caching, analytics, container and microservice workloads, these instances deliver higher memory bandwidth and improved per-vCPU performance.
Compared with Graviton4-based R8g instances, R9g offers up to 25% higher per-vCPU compute performance. It upgrades memory speed from DDR5-5600 to DDR5-8800 MT/s, expands L3 cache fivefold, and boosts network and EBS bandwidth on top-tier configurations. The r9g.48xlarge delivers up to 100 Gbps network bandwidth and 72 Gbps EBS bandwidth.
Target Workloads
R9g instances support memory-heavy Linux workloads, including relational and open-source databases, in-memory caches (Valkey, Redis, Memcached), real-time analytics, and containerized workloads on Kubernetes, Docker, EKS and ECS. They also accommodate applications built with C/C++, Rust, Go, Java, Python, .NET Core, Node.js, Ruby and PHP.
Matching R9g’s compute and networking capabilities, R9gd adds high-speed local NVMe storage inherited from AWS’s storage-optimized instance lineup. It suits workloads requiring low-latency local capacity for scratch data, temporary caching, distributed analytics and database operations.

Both families support Instance Bandwidth Configuration, letting users rebalance EBS and VPC network bandwidth in 25% increments, ideal for asymmetric I/O workloads such as databases and caching systems.

Powered by the AWS Nitro System, R9g and R9gd offload virtualization, networking and storage tasks to dedicated hardware. They integrate the Nitro Isolation Engine debuted on C9g and M9g instances, which restricts VM memory, register and I/O access via a limited, formally verified API for stronger isolation.
The 11 available instance sizes (medium to metal-48xl) support major Arm-compatible OSes, including Amazon Linux 2/2023, Ubuntu 22.04+, RHEL 8.4+, SUSE 15 SP3+ and Debian 12+.
Existing R8g workloads can migrate to matching R9g sizes without code changes, with Arm64 multi-arch container images supported on EKS, ECS and standard Kubernetes clusters.
Initially available in US East (N. Virginia, Ohio), US West (Oregon) and Europe (Frankfurt), the instances support On-Demand, Spot, Savings Plans, Dedicated Instances and Dedicated Hosts pricing models.
